Yunshuiyao, Yongding Tulou, and Dongshan Island

YunshuiyaoFlip image
Yunshuiyao

Yunshuiyao lies within the cultural landscape of the UNESCO-listed Fujian Tulou. Streams, old paths, ancient banyan trees, and earthen-building settlements preserve the character of a mountain village in southwestern Fujian. Square Hegui Lou, built on marshy ground, and the richly decorated circular Huaiyuan Lou show how Hakka communities adapted construction to local conditions and combined defence, family residence, worship, and communal life.

Yongding TulouFlip image
Yongding Tulou

The Gaobei Tulou Cluster, home to Chengqi Lou, is an important part of the UNESCO-listed Fujian Tulou. Begun in the Ming dynasty, Chengqi Lou is famous for its immense four-storey circular form and four concentric rings of rooms around a central ancestral hall. Its rammed-earth walls, timber galleries, and carefully ordered family spaces embody Hakka solutions for defence, communal residence, and clan ritual in a mountain environment.

The reference departure time is 8:00 a.m. Yunshuiyao is visited first, followed by the Yongding Tulou scenic area; traffic, reservations, and walking ability may change the order.

Jinluan Bay, Nanmen Bay, Sufeng Mountain, Fengdong Rock, and departure

Nanmen BayFlip image
Nanmen Bay

Nanmen Bay curves around the southern edge of Tongling on Dongshan Island. Colourful hillside homes, the fishing harbour, seawall, and old streets create a layered coastal settlement. Once an everyday shoreline for boats, fishing, and trade, it still preserves the close spatial relationship between the old town and the sea, making the bay a record of Dongshan's long maritime way of life.

Sufeng MountainFlip image
Sufeng Mountain

Sufeng Mountain rises directly from Dongshan Island's eastern coast toward the Taiwan Strait. Granite slopes, cliffs, bays, offshore rocks, and wind-power structures form a broad mountain-and-sea landscape, while the road follows the changing elevation between land and water. The setting captures how granite geology, monsoon weather, and island settlement have shaped Dongshan's coast.

The reference finish is around 6:00 p.m., followed by transfer to Yunxiao or Zhangzhou Station. Stop durations are planned backwards from the train, traffic, and opening conditions.
